Samsung Will Continue Using Google for its Tablets

Samsung plans to continue utilizing Google’s Android mobile-device software. This announcement probably does not surprise many people. The plan is to run future versions of Samsung tablet computers.

“We’ll continue to work with Android on future tablets,” J.K. Shin, who heads up Samsung’s mobile division, was quoted in The Wall Street Journal.

Although Nokia is still the biggest cellphone manufacturer in the world, Samsung Electronics is number two. However, it does trail Apple’s iPhone and iPad in smartphones and tablets sales.

The Android system has positively boosted Samsung’s smartphone sales and they are hoping for more of the same with their tablet business.

Since last year, with the surprising success of The iPad, Samsung decided to respond by selecting Android for its tablets to compete with Apple.

Samsung will launch new versions of the Galaxy Tab this summer in an 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch model. Both will run Honeycomb, which is the latest version of Android.

Interestingly enough, Apple is a huge customer for many Samsung components. This has not stopped the two companies from engaging in various lawsuits against one another.

Samsung expects its tablet shipments to rise significantly in 2011 to an estimated 7.5 million. Some market data providers have predicted Apple’s iPad shipments could reach as many as 39.7 million in 2011.

With Android being the fastest-growing platform, it appears that Samsung Electronics will be riding the wave.
